    Stallion Promotion Series: Print Advertising

The advertisements fill the pages of the American Quarter Horse Journal and Paint Horse Journal; page after page of stallions for stud and the achievements of their offspring.Print advertising in magazines is one of the most successful ways of advertising your stallion. Owners of mares subscribe to these magazines just to see what stallions are doing what in the show ring and in the breeding barn. These owners will also save these magazines for many years to come.

Despite the high cost of print advertising, there are many benefits that come with it as well. If you can afford the full-page and full color ads, you are able to preserve that picture of your stallion in the minds of many mare owners. Even if you can't afford the full-page ads, the one-inch depth ads are great because they are what people see as they flip through the pages of the magazines. Most magazines will allow you to reserve a preferred spot in the publication so that your ad will always be in the same place. You can also get reduced rates if you advertise for multiple months, but you often have to sign a contract stating that you will continue to run your ad for so many months at that price. Most breed magazines also offer reduced rates for breeders. The pure fact that mare owners will continually see your horse on the page consistently will build curiosity in what your stallion has to offer them.

Another benefit is that many horse people like to collect their horse magazines. I personally had Western Horseman magazines back to the early 80's that a friend of my grandmother had saved and passed them on to me. The Paint Horse Journal Subscriber Profile shows that 9 out of 10 of their readers save their issues for future reference and often go back and look at them. This means that ten years down the road a reader may look at your ad and decide to see if you are still standing your stallion. Twenty two percent of readers bred to Paint stallions that were advertised in the Paint Horse Journal.

Cheaper alternatives to breed organization magazines include smaller publications such as Today's Horse TraderThey offer reduced rates for breeders and have a special stallion listing section, where you can have a color picture of your stallion with a description and your contact information. This publication can be picked up at any feed store and some bookstores.

Despite the cost of print advertising, the benefits that you will reap from the print advertisements will be worth it down the road and they will continue to pay for themselves. To offset some of the cost look for smaller advertising agencies that offer reduced prices compared to the photographers. The photographer's pictures and even personal pictures can be used in print ads through some graphical work.

Print advertising is definitely a must for a successful breeding campaign.

    The Classic Arabian Horse
When it comes to talking about Arabian horses, passion is not unusual, and it's a passion that author Peter Upton and editor Hossein Amirsadeghi, along with photographers Rik van Lent, Sr. and Jr., lovingly share in Arabians: The Classic Arabian Horse. Both a stunning photographic journey—composed of more than 250 full-color photographs, arranged by geographical area—and a fascinating history lesson, Arabians begins with a thorough examination of the horse's origins, which date back to 1700 B.C.
